What is Mucuna Pruriens and L-DOPA?

Mucuna pruriens is a shrub which uses it vines as support to climb and grow. When Mucunapruriens are young

they are covered with hair which disappears as the plant gets old.The plant growswell in tropical areas of India,

West Indies and Africa. The leaves of Mucuna pruriens are of variousshapes like ovate, tripinnate and rhombus

shape.

Mucuna Pruriens Extract is anti-paralysis agitans. Through the blood-brain barrier into the braintissue, but by the

decarboxylation of dopa decarboxylase into dopamine,play a role.

L-DOPA is used to increase dopamine concentrations in the treatment of PD and DRD, since it iscapable of

crossing the protective blood-brain barrier (BBB), whereas dopamine itself cannot. Once L-DOPA has entered the

central nervous system (CNS), it is converted into dopamine by the enzymearomatic L-amino acid decarboxylase

(AADC), also known as DOPA decarboxylase (DDC).Pyridoxal phosphate (PLP; Vitamin B6) is a required cofactor

in this reaction, and may occasionallybe administered along with L-DOPA, usually in the form of pyridoxine.

Mucuna pruriens extract contains levodopa (L-dopa), which is used to treat Parkinson's disease. L-dopa is

changed to the chemical dopamine in the brain. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease occur in patients due to low

levels of dopamine in the brain. Unfortunately, most L-dopa is broken down in the body before it ever reaches the

brain unless special chemicals are used with levodopa. These chemicals are not present in Mucuna pruriens
